A biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel drugs for the treatment of schizophrenia, depression, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. The company’s core technology is based on the scientific work of Dr. Paul Greengard, a Nobel-prize winning scientist at New York’s Rockefeller University. In June 2007, the company initiated Phase I clinical trials for a series of compounds focused on the treatment of schizophrenia and sleep disorders.

Intra-Cellular Therapies is currently headquartered in the Audubon Technology Park (Columbia University’s incubator) in Washington Heights.

An early-stage biotechnology company focused on the development of advanced vaccines for prevention of common seasonal influenza and emergent pandemic flu. The Company was formed to commercialize patented technologies developed over the course of a decade by Dr. Peter Palese and Dr. Adolfo-Garcia Sastre at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM). These investigators led teams that reconstructed and studied the pathogenicity of the highly virulent but extinct 1918 pandemic influenza virus. Vivaldi’s technologies provide a comprehensive approach to overcome the major drawbacks of existing flu vaccines. The world market for seasonal influenza vaccines is expected to exceed $4 billion by 2010. Vivaldi’s initial focus is development of a seasonal flu vaccine that provides improved protection for adults age fifty and over, who are among the most vulnerable to flu and its complications, and available vaccines generally have reduced efficacy in this age group.

Originally incubated in San Francisco, CA, Vivaldi Biosciences relocated its headquarters and operations to New York City in the fall of 2008.

The new facility provides a needed anchor for children and their families in one of the more distressed neighborhoods of the city. The school is not only able expand its enrollment, but now has space for a library, auditorium/lunch room, computer room and athletic facilities, which could not be accommodated in the previous facilities. One of the floors has been leased by the local YMCA, which offers after-school programs for the broader East New York Community.

FLU has historically offered its members commercial health insurance plans operated by traditional carriers that set premiums and plan availability. As a freestanding insurance company, FIC can now offer additional plan customization based on its members’ needs. FIC will also be able to maintain better control over future premium increases and expand into new industry sectors that were previously ineligible for membership under third party plans.

Freelance workers represent approximately 30% of the nation's workforce, including an estimated 1 million people in NYC, which face high individual insurance premiums and are often forced to go without coverage.  FIC is an innovative program that could potentially serve as a model to help address the national issue of providing health care insurance for the growing ranks of the uninsured.

NYCSeed LLC is a $2 million funding initiative designed to provide deserving New York City seed stage companies with the capital and support they need to move from idea to product launch.  The initiative is a partnership between New York City Investment Fund, Polytechnic Institute of NYU, New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (“NYSTAR”), New York City Economic Development Corporation, and the Industrial & Technology Assistance Corporation (“ITAC”). NYCSeed is operating out of Polytechnic Institute’s incubator in downtown Brooklyn, and NYCSeed companies will have access to incubator services as needed. 

In addition to funding, NYCSeed partners also provide resources and support for young companies. Funded companies join an extensive media and technology community, and receive guidance from notable entrepreneurs, technologists and venture capitalists. With the support of prominent New York City start-up community members, funded companies will be able to successfully move to their next stage of development.  Also in order to promote the development of emerging high technology companies, NYCSeed provides a network of mentors, and educational and networking events for the broader NYC digital media and information technology entrepreneur community.
